What Is Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)?
Biofilm, the colorless, sticky layer of bacteria that builds up on your teeth, is the leading cause of tooth decay, gum disease, and implant infections. Guided Biofilm Therapy is an innovative, minimally invasive approach to removing biofilm, enhancing your oral health.
But how does GBT work? AirFlow technology gently propels a controlled stream of air, warm water, and a fine powder to disrupt and eliminate biofilm with minimal contact. We may use a disclosing agent before your cleaning to make the biofilm visible, allowing for precise and thorough removal. Unlike traditional biofilm removal, which often involves scraping or metal vibrations, GBT is exceptionally gentle, cleaning those hard-to-reach areas that manual cleaning tools may miss.
What Are the Uses of Guided Biofilm Therapy?
GBT's primary use is thoroughly removing plaque and biofilm, the root causes of tooth decay, gum disease, and implant infections. The following are some ways it can enhance your dental care:
- Routine Dental Cleanings (Prophylaxis): If you have healthy gums, GBT provides a more comfortable and effective solution for preventing the buildup of harmful bacteria. This helps lower the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and a host of oral health problems.
- Deep Dental Cleaning (Scaling and Root Planing): If you have periodontal (gum) disease, GBT provides an exceptionally comfortable and thorough dental cleaning. The innovative technology helps reduce inflammation and promotes gum tissue healing.
- Dental Implant Maintenance: GBT is considered the gold standard for the long-term care of dental implants. It gently removes the biofilm that can lead to peri-implantitis, a serious inflammation that can lead to implant failure.
What Can You Expect During Treatment?
Your GBT process begins by making biofilm visible with a harmless disclosing agent. Next, the innovative AirFlow technology uses a comfortable stream of warm water, air, and fine powder to gently eliminate plaque, tartar, and surface stains.
When it comes to cleaning deep gum pockets, we use the PerioFlow handheld device with a specialized tip that's ideal for periodontal therapy. The minimally invasive technology targets pockets effectively while reducing discomfort. It also helps preserve the cementum, which covers your tooth roots and the underlying dentin layer. For periodontal pockets deeper than 10 mm, we use the Piezon technology. Ultrasonic tips gently remove hardened tartar, allowing for a safe and pain-free dental cleaning experience. This innovative technology can also target tartar up to 3 mm below the implants.
GBT can often reveal oral health problems, like signs of early decay hidden by plaque and tartar. This ensures prompt treatment, helping prevent minor issues from progressing. After your GBT cleaning, we'll apply fluoride if needed and provide personalized oral hygiene guidance to help you maintain a healthy smile.
